Discovered in Sib-pairs
Autism involves at least eleven fields of study and no one is an expert in all of them. Since I am a Social Worker I decided to connect the theories as they came in to me. Most of the researchers bored in with their favorite theories while I tried to connect the dots or puzzle pieces to form a picture. As you will see we all went far in one direction or another looking for the truth. My guiding map included refraining from falling in love with the puzzle pieces. If a piece did not fit I wasn’t going to reshape it to make it fit. I looked to see the connections between the pieces and the picture that was emerging.
In the early going many famous facilities took on studying autism with the hope of being first at identifying causes. In some instances chromosomal anomalies were guessed at then checked out. Deletions plus additions in Chromosomes as well as genes all the way down to G inhibitory alpha proteins were looked at. Once drill downs occurred some Universities kept going in the same direction.
Portia Iverson a mother from California formed Cure Autism Now (CAN) and opened the door for sibling pair family identification which has been extremely helpful. With additional clarification Mary Megson MD from Richmond, Virginia identified a connection between mothers with night vision problems and their children with “sludgy guts.” I have looked at several different ways it may be possible to develop autism. I have not fully investigated all of them but I have carefully looked at two of them. Antibiotics given prior to the age of one appears to be the overwhelming cause.
